Join us for an information session and meetup to learn more about the volunteer opportunities with Startup Barrie.
This session is for people who shared their interested in volunteering at the Kickoff Party in April. Or maybe you recently discovered Startup Barrie and want to be apart of the community, but aren't sure where to start. In one fun evening we'll meet other volunteers, Community Builders and opportunities to help build the Startup Community in Barrie!
Volunteer Information Session Presentation starts @ 7:30pm
Social Media Manager // 1-4 hours / month
You have the strategic chops to lead the team in all things social-media related. You have a demonstrable working knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) and you can successfully manage several social media channels. You will help grow the local (and national) Startup Barrie and Startup Canada presence on social networking sites, and you will lead the development, implementation and coordination of Startup Barrie’s 2016-2017 Social Media Strategy.
You will work collaboratively with Barrie’s Community Builders, Enterprise Builders, partners, and volunteers to create engaging online content. You will identify trends and recommend social media best practices to develop social media messaging and grow the following while converting interested participants to enthusiastic advocates.
This is an ideal role for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, who is experienced managing a social media campaigns. This person has built an online presence that will assist Startup Barrie to build and engage with their audience in a strong and vibrant manner providing relevant, up to date information about entrepreneurship and opportunities in our community.

Social Media Coordinator // 2-6 hours / month
You are passionate about all things social-media related. You have a demonstrable working knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,YouTube, etc.) and you can successfully manage several social media channels using software like Hootsuite or Buffer. You will help grow the local (and national) Startup Barrie and Startup Canada presence on social networking sites and you will lead the development, implementation and coordination of Startup Barrie’s 2016-2017 Social Media Strategy by curating content, scheduling it, building engagement and sharing local community events, news, current events and anything related to entrepreneurship locally and across Canada.
You will work collaboratively with Barrie’s Community Builders, Enterprise Builders, partners, and volunteers to create engaging online content. You will identify trends and recommend social media best practices to write social media messaging and grow the Startup Barrie following while converting interested participants to enthusiastic advocates.
This is an ideal role for someone who has an entrepreneurial spirit or an up and coming entrepreneur or freelancer who is experienced in the writing and scheduling of messages using deployment software such as Hootsuite or Buffer.

You can speak to people in their language and you understand that different types of people are motivated by different things. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You are familiar with audience segmentation and content strategy and you can craft communications that will resonate with various target groups. You will dig into the insights that drive our fundraising ambassadors to support Startup Barrie and leverage that understanding to recruit new supporters. You will play an integral role in developing the Startup Barrie’s content strategy, both on a regional and national scale. You will also work with the social media team and event team to coordinate actions.

Event Volunteer // 2-3 hours / month
You can speak to people with ease and assist them in feeling comfortable when they walk into a new environment. You understand that different types of people come from different education levels and have different ways of learning, and support them as they navigate new environments, meet new people while at events. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal communication skills are vital to you because you thrive on building close, harmonious relationships, understanding another's feelings and ideas communicating yours well. You are confident, assertive and friendly, building positive and engaging relationships. You understand that communication starts with listening to support and meet the needs of others. You will provide information to entrepreneurs, freelancers, self employed, and anyone interested in learning more about Startup Barrie and Startup Canada. You will guide and direct attendees at a range of full stack entrepreneurial events upon arrival of an event, and addressing any questions around Startup Barrie, entrepreneurship, local resources, partners and/or sponsors. You will play an integral role in developing awareness, rapport, and communications for Startup Barrie.
This is an ideal role for someone who has an entrepreneurial spirit, for an up-and coming entrepreneur or freelancer, who is comfortable using technology such as Eventbrite to check-in attendees with a mobile app.

Community Ambassador // 1-6hrs / month
You are an ambassador of the entrepreneurship community in Barrie, sharing and promoting anything related to Startup Barrie and entrepreneurship to create hype and buzz about all the exciting opportunities Startup Barrie is creating for our budding entrepreneurial community. You work at empowering others by offering insight, information and resources offered in Barrie Greater Area to support others in in startup stages of business, those new to the community, and/or considering relocating to Barrie to start a business.
You’ll be an Ambassador both online and offline, sharing the message of Startup Barrie, recruiting and referring prospect volunteers and groups that will benefit from Startup Barrie, offering credible knowledge, while building relationships with entrepreneurs, local government and/or local community leaders. You are comfortable in a communication role, and willing to share information, and help others get the information they seek. You fully believe in open source knowledge, and communities that support knowledge sharing.
You will represent Startup Barrie when out at other events, festivals, with local media, businesses, not-for-profits and other civic organizations simply by sharing what we’re all about and doing for the community. You will identity any news or opportunities to the Community Builders, Enterprise Builders, partners, volunteers to help build, foster and create the community that will help us strengthen our community.

Website Content Coordinator // 2-3 hours / month
You are the digital voice of the online community for Startup Barrie online presence helping to publish content to the website and update the blog. You’re super familiar with WordPress (or are willing to learn) to manage website content. You will work with bloggers and designers to ensure the website meets the needs of the community. You’re familiar with HTML, CSS, png, svg, jpg, Illustrator, and Photoshop. You will work with the social media team to coordinate sharing of content.
This is an ideal role for someone who has an entrepreneurial spirit, for an-up and coming entrepreneur or freelancer, and is experienced using image editing software like Photoshop, WordPress, widgets, plugins, and/or is willing to learn about the open source platform.

Bloggers // 1+ blog article / month
Are you a blogger or hold a respected voice that influences your industry? We’re looking for Bloggers to help build our Startup Barrie community, to spread the message about entrepreneurship, small business, business in Barrie, innovation, tech, open knowledge sharing, events, and so much more with your blog articles!
You have the ability to produce well-written and compelling blog articles, write, edit and research topic content, exceptional eye for detail, editorial judgment, proofreading and grammatical skills. You take ownership of your blog articles and drive blog articles to completion. You understand how social sharing works and an understanding of how content must be written for SEO.

Graphic Designer // 2-3 hours / month
You are a graphic designer who is comfortable working in both print and web mediums, excellent design layout skills, a good understanding of design principles to conceptualize and execute concepts to a finished product. You’ll be working with a National brand that may be used on projects for flyers, brochures, business, cards, and web graphics, so adhering to brand guidelines is a must. You understand HTML, CSS, and WordPress, and have access to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. You work well independently to solve problems and make decisions, while paying attention to details. You love working with people, entrepreneurs, business and spearheading projects to help build a new community.
This is an ideal role for someone who has an entrepreneurial spirit, for an-up and coming entrepreneur or freelancer, and is experienced using Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and setting graphic design files up for print output.

Web Designer & Developer // 2-3 hours / month
You are a web designer who is comfortable working with both graphic and web development technologies, who has a good understanding of information architecture, hierarchy, web design best practices, web development languages like HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript and jQuery. You know Wordpress (or are willing to learn) and love to stay on top of all things web design and development trends and technology as well as high understanding of user experience best practices.
You will have experience migrating content from Word documents and email communications in order to make it live on Startup Barrie’s website for all to see! You have experience optimizing image assets for the web with Photoshop and Illustrator (jpg, png, svg) and it will be ideal for the Web Designer to have access to the Adobe Creative Suite to effectively work in this role.

Event Host(s) // 3.5 Hours each event + prep time (if needed)
You are the consummate host and speak with people at ease in a professional and courteous manner. You understand how to work a crowd, manage it, prevent and diffuse the risk of confrontation and assist with general hosting duties like admission, ushering, and responding to guest question and inquiries. You have strong communication skills, enjoy speaking to groups of people empowering them, and helping them understand the context of event topics and discussions at the events you host.
You are confident, assertive and friendly. You thrive on building positive and engaging relationships with an audience. You will act as an ambassador as a host, providing information to entrepreneurs, freelancers, self employed, and anyone interested in learning more about Startup Barrie and Startup Canada in a fun and engaging way. You will play an integral role in developing awareness, rapport, and communications for Startup Barrie both offline and online, while coordinating with the social media team to help promote the event you are hosting to your networks and the community.
This is an ideal role for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, or for an up-and coming entrepreneur or freelancer, who is comfortable and experienced with public speaking. This public speaking experience can be from teaching, hosting events, or in an entertainment type role.
